Goma Goes To Emergency Vet

I know sometimes unexpected things happen in life...I noticed last Saturday, Goma wasn't eating or drinking. He was going to bathroom every 5 minutes but nothing seemed to come out... so my BF went to online to ldo some research on that and he told me that it might be "blocking" or "urinary infection" both can be very serious sickness for cats. It was already around 10:00pm so we decided to take him in to emergency Vet. The Vet first checked his bladder and find out he has no urine in it at all. That means not that it is functioning okay... but he told us Goma may having urinary infection but he can not do the test because he has no urine in his bladder. So he gave Goma some fluid through his neck and the oral medicine called Meloxicam to ease his pain and uncomfortableness. He told me to check his litter box often to see if he is urinating and after few days to take him in to the Vet for urinary exam. So I went to my regular Vet today and Goma had his urine taken. The vet told me he has some skin irritation around his butt, it is because I have hard time cleaning and combing out this area....Goma hates it when I touch him there...so it might cause some infection...I feel really bad, I should have clean him even though he complain so much. Now I will clean him and wash him at least once a month!! so he will not have to go through this again!! Now Goma is still on Meloxicam and Zeniquin, anti-bacterial medicine for few more days. Even though Goma had such a long day today, he is acting normal so I feel like worst part is over. I still gonna watch him closely though!! Thank you so much for your concerns and prayers! I will give more updates tomorrow!!

Oh no! Poor Goma. ;-; I wash my Himmie every week--she hates it, but it's necessary because they just can't clean themselves as effectively as short-haired breeds. I start by going over her with a matbreaker (but since I brush her every day, finding a mat is rare; it just helps to thin the undercoat a bit), then with a wire comb, and I usually clip her butt and the part of her belly close to it, and just the underside of her tail close to it, to about 3/4". She HATES clippers, but then I put her in the bath and she hates that more. I found they can tolerate a bath MUCH better than a shower.. maybe try that? Anyway, if you do it often enough, he'll get used to it. It just takes time and patience!

Oh, Sachie-san! We are "twins". Today my Sammi-chan had to go to the doctor for bloody urine and straining. He is a Maine Coon and he's 13. He was treated for UTI (urinary tract infection) early in February, too. Doctor wanted to put him on Science Diet special food, but we are a big family, and besides, I do not agree with the doctor that this is good food (a lot of people don't, either). So we have 2 prescriptions, for Prednisolone and for Baytril. So Goma-chan and Sammi-chan will get better together, on opposite coasts! Feel-better wishes from us to Goma-chan ((((((((^^))))))))

Goma! You scared me when I saw the blog title. I'm so glad you are okay. I've had a few blockages because of all of my floof and my mom has rushed me to the vet. Mom used to give me baths all the time when I was younger, but now that I am older, the vet doesn't want me to get baths. My mom brushes me regularly, but we himmies still have lots of floof. I also don't like it when my mom brushes around my back end.

You take care of yourself. You're my special BF.

Oh, poor Goma! I feel for you both. I know that you take wonderful care of Goma, we do the best we can. It is good that he gets used to be thoroughly groomed (as in a bath and trim) twice a year. I know it is still cool there, but you might want to think about a summer haircut for him. My persian loves having short hair - although I groom him regularly, I can't keep up with his beautiful hair. I think Goma might feel better if he has a "trim", doesn't have to be all over his body. . . The trim will help you keep him clean and feeling comfortable. Please tell Goma that THIS WILL NOT HURT HIS MODELING CAREER!

Please keep us advised, I am so sorry that he is unwell. Tell Goma that we are praying for him!

Meows to you both,
Kay

Next time you bring him to the vet, have them trim the area around his bottom - this will make it easier to keep that area clean.

Poor Goma! There's nothing worse than having piddler problems.

Get better soon, Goma!

You may want to keep an eye on Goma while on his meds. Metacam (i.e Meloxicam)has some pretty nasty side effects on some cats.

No, Goma, you have stinky butt cause you are sick. We're sticking to that story. And you should too!

Now, get well, okay!

Oh, Goma! Feel better soon, we are all worried about you!
I also have a kitty with bladder problems, and it's very sad to see them so uncomfortable. But Goma has one of the best mommies around, and lots of people who care about him so I'm sure he'll be feeling better soon.

Wow I didn't know all this stuff about long haired cats. We have had our Himalyan (Iowa Goma) for a few weeks now. She is supposed to be 3 years old. My daughter brushes her everyday but after finding out about poor Goma and his bottom we will be taking extra care of our Goma.
Get better sweet Goam!

oh no, i was reading your text and couldnt help thinking "urinary track infection" and I was really scared for your Goma. My Moka got that and I almost lost him. Most people call me crazy when they know how high the vet bill went... But I dont have any regrets.

Im really glad Goma is going to be okay :) The fact that he started acting normaly again is a very good sign!!

@jmuhj Prescription diet is indeed very bad food. A few years back it was the only food available for cat with that sort of problem, my older cat (he lives with my parents) took it and still live an happy and healthy life. But today, they are about 4-5 brand of food that can prevent those disease. Check their ingredients if you can :) The one I found was the better was actually the cheaper among those brand ^.^

Oh, Goma! Are you OK? I had no idea long-hair cat has such a problem. Dont't worry, your mommy is gonna take good care of you. Please get well soon!!

Hang in there, Goma and Sachie!! Bhu had a similar problem when he was 4 years old, so we cut the fur on his butt down to a reasonable amount of fluff and it really did help. Bhu has a professional grooming once a month, which also cuts down on a variety of ills, including obnoxious hairballs! Sachie, you are a wonderful mom and you are taking VERY good care of Goma! Hope he feels better soon! Bhu is purraying for him and so am I! xxoo Patty & Bhu

so sorry goma's not feeling well! :(
when it comes to urinary stuff, expecially with male cats, don't hesitate or delay taking him to the vet anytime you sense something is wrong. i lost a cat due to a blockage, i was out of town and my cat sitter was neglectful to say the least, but the vet later told me you these kill them in 24-48 hours! so act fast. get better soon!!

jmuhj said...

Thank you xsweetxsweetlullaby for that. And to those who don't know, yes, urinary tract infections can kill the host, whether feline, human, or whomever! If you can't rid your body of urine, you get uremic poisoning because the toxins (bacteria=germs) can't get out. It is EXTREMELY painful as well. Always use common sense with your loved ones, whatever species! If it would hurt us/make us sick, of course it would our cat(s), too! We're all living beings and all mammals.

Feel better soon, Goma-chan! Sammi-chan is taking his pills and will get better with you. ((((((((^^ ^^))))))))
